These delightful decorative animals have been lovingly handcrafted by the mothers of students at la Puerta Abierta, a non-profit creative education center in Santiago, Guatemala. Stitching the animals helps the mothers pay for their children's education at the school. By purchasing these ornaments, you're helping with tuition as well.
Each colorful animal is made of 100% cotton, stitched by hand, with applique patches of repurposed CORTE. With their friendly expressions, the animals are great as decorations for the home or for bags and backpacks.

The patches on this ornament come from a recycled corte, a vibrant handwoven skirt worn by Guatemalan women. When these durable cortes are ready for a second life, they are hand selected from local markets, washed, and repurposed.
